Subterranean Termites

Subterranean Termites cause billions of dollars in damage to our properties per year!

Every year, America spends billions of dollars treating, controlling and repairing wood damage caused by the Subterranean termite. The Subterranean termite lives in a nest deep in the ground, in what is called a " colony." These colonies can infest many structures from a distance, sometimes setting up satellite termite colonies, much like Carpenter Ants. Key areas to locate the evidence of subterranean termites can be found in sub structures, support wall baseboards and then all the way into the attic/roof framing.

The queen and king subterranean termites remains in the underground while the termite workers are constantly foraging for food. They construct an elaborate system of underground tunnels leading from the nest to their various food sources. An old subterranean termite colony may contain hundreds of thousands of workers and forage in an area approaching the size of a city block! Because of the numbers of insects involved and their ability to survive in a wider range of climates, subterranean termites are generally considered the most destructive in terms of property damage.

The subterranean termite mud shelter tubes can be found in all locations of the home or building. Subterranean termites use these shelters for climate control and safety from the environment, ie. rain, wind, cold and predators. Subterranean termites will also enter the home through expansion joints or cracks in the cement slab and behind areas of stucco.

In high moisture areas like bathrooms, kitchens, windows and doors, the subterranean shelter tube is used by the reproductive winged adults members. You will find these reproductive winged adults members around your home.
