Carpenter ants are a very common home invader in California. Normally carpenter ants are found in log and tree stumps.
They will invade our homes in search of food. Carpenter ants do not eat wood like a dry-wood termite. However they do tunnel and excavate into a board, wall or ceiling. The carpenter ant can excavate just about any building material like a foamed insulation board and use it to set up their satellite nests. Carpenter ants can cause structural damage. We find them in both city and country homes.
They are all over the North-Bay and Sonoma/Marin County and up the California coast. The photos below were from a home in Healdsburg, you can see the eggs in the center of the boards. In this same wall, just a board over, was also an infestation of subterranean termites.
Subterranean termites and carpenter ants are not the best of friends. They are natural enemies.

The Carpenter ant is not like a termite. They do not eat the wood they are in. Instead they carve out or excavate wood, creating voids. Carpenter ants can cause serious structural damage to your homes foundation and decks.
